An El Paso man was sentenced to 35 years in prison this week after pleading guilty in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend in her West Side apartment in 2018.
Zachary Adrian Zamora, now 26, was convicted of killing 20-year-old Sylvia Guerrero after breaking into her apartment in the 5400 block of Ridge Street on June 3, 2018, court records and newspaper archives state.
On Wednesday, Judge Maria Salas-Mendoza of the 120th District Court sentenced Zamora after he pleaded guilty to charges of murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, according to court records.
As part of the plea deal, Zamora will receive sentencing credit for spending nearly four years in jail awaiting trial.
On the morning of the deadly shooting, Zamora was the target of a large manhunt, including searches using a helicopter and a police dog while police blocked streets and checked vehicles leaving the West Side neighborhood.
Zamora managed to flee but was later arrested in Juárez and returned to El Paso.
Marijuana robbery murder
In a separate recent case, an El Paso woman was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the fatal shooting of a man during a marijuana-deal robbery in the Lower Valley in 2018.
Jerrica Marie Arredondo, now 22, was sentenced March 7 in 243rd District Court after pleading guilty to charges of murder and aggravated robbery, court records show.
Arredondo and Ashley Richelle Galloway were convicted in the death of 25-year-old Carlos Calderon on March 31, 2018.
The two women planned to rob Calderon during a deal to buy marijuana from him at an apartment on Alameda Avenue. The robbery didn’t go as planned and Galloway shot Calderon twice as he ran out of the apartment.
In 2019, Galloway pleaded guilty to a murder charge and was sentenced to 35 years in prison, according to court records.
The women initially faced a capital murder charge, punishable by life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
